If you're planning to visit Seoul this
spring or summer, make sure to include the city's outdoor libraries in your
itinerary. These unique spaces offer a peaceful and cultural experience right
in the heart of the bustling metropolis.
In 2025, Seoul's outdoor libraries will be
open from April 23 to June 29 and again from September to November. You can
find them at three main locations: Seoul Plaza, Gwanghwamun Square, and along
the Cheonggyecheon Stream. These libraries operate from Thursday to Sunday,
offering visitors a chance to relax and read in open-air settings.

During the peak summer months, from early
June to September, the libraries transform into "Night Libraries",
operating from 4 PM to 9 PM. This allows visitors to enjoy reading under the
evening sky, accompanied by various cultural events.
Visitors can look forward to a variety of
activities, including author meet-and-greets, literary discussions, and
cultural performances. Special events are planned to coincide with national
holidays and festivals, providing unique opportunities to engage with local
traditions. For instance, the Seoul Outdoor Library in Hangang Park will host
sessions on May 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31, aligning with various city-wide
celebrations.

In addition to reading, attendees can enjoy
themed nights featuring music, movies, and animated films, especially during
the "Night Library" sessions held from June to September. These
evening events create a magical atmosphere, allowing visitors to experience
literature under the stars.
The Seoul Outdoor Library program began in
2022, initiated by Mayor Oh Se-hoon to promote reading and provide accessible
cultural spaces. Starting with Seoul Plaza, the program expanded to include
Gwanghwamun Square and Cheonggyecheon Stream in subsequent years. By 2024, the
initiative had attracted approximately 1.7 million visitors, highlighting its
popularity and success.
