If you haven't heard of KATSEYE yet, it's
time to tune in. Formed through the 2023 reality show "Dream Academy", a
collaboration between HYBE Corporation and Geffen Records, KATSEYE consists of
six talented members: Manon, Sophia, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae.
Hailing from diverse backgrounds – including the Philippines, South Korea,
Switzerland, and the United States – the group embodies a truly global
identity. Their name was inspired by the gemstone called cat’s eye, which is
known to have an iridescent color. The different colors within the gemstone reflect
the group members’ multifaceted talents and uniqueness.
Is KATSEYE a K-pop group?

KATSEYE challenges traditional definitions
of K-pop. While they were formed through a Korean-style trainee system and have
undergone rigorous training in performance, vocals, and teamwork, their music
and branding are tailored for a global audience. Their journey, documented in
the Netflix series “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE”, showcases their
dedication and the intensive preparation that mirrors the K-pop industry's
standards. However, their diverse lineup and English-language songs position
them as a bridge between K-pop and Western pop music, creating a unique hybrid
that resonates worldwide. This aligns with HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk’s
long-held vision to expand the scope and longevity of K-pop.
"Gnarly"

KATSEYE's musical journey began with their
debut single "Debut", followed by "Touch", a melodic drum
and bass-infused dance-pop track that explores the complexities of love. Right away "Touch" attracted a lot of attention, especially after its
choreography went viral on TikTok, leading to chart entries in multiple
countries, including the Billboard Global 200 and the US Bubbling Under Hot
100.

However, their latest release, "Gnarly",
marks a bold departure from their earlier sound. Described as a hyper-pop and
experimental pop track, "Gnarly" is characterized by its chaotic
energy, gritty synths, punk elements and a bold attitude. The song's lyrics
revolve around the multifaceted meaning of the word "gnarly",
capturing both positive and negative connotations. This shift in musical style
showcases KATSEYE's versatility and willingness to push boundaries, further
solidifying their place in the global music landscape.
